Mechanical Design & Test Engineer Space Sector Our client, a leading organisation within the UK space industry, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design & Test Engineer to play a key role in advancing their launch capability development, on a full-time contract basis. You ll contribute to an exciting range of technologies and development activities, including: Composites fabrication Infrastructure and facility commissioning Product development across multiple subsystems Integration, verification, and system-level testing Key Responsibilities Produce detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings (SolidWorks, Autodesk) Lead internal design reviews and support technical discussions with suppliers and clients Collaborate with electronics engineers on subsystem integration including PCBs, sensors, and communications hardware Develop mechanical solutions across structures, propulsion, thermal management, and safety-critical systems Apply Design-for-Excellence (DfX) principles to improve manufacturability and serviceability Create and execute comprehensive test plans, including shock, vibration, thermal cycling, and IP compliance testing Analyse test data, drive design improvements, and contribute to prototype assembly and validation Communicate technical information clearly within a multi-disciplinary engineering team Essential Skills & Experience Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent professional experience Proven track record in mechanical design for complex electro-mechanical products Strong proficiency in 3D CAD tools and Product Data Management (PDM) systems Hands-on experience with hardware verification and environmental testing Understanding of manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, and additive manufacturing Eligibility for UK security clearance (BPSS) Desirable Attributes Experience working with composites and advanced material systems Familiarity with systems engineering methodologies Working knowledge of FEA and/or CFD analysis

Strong knowledge of FANUC, ISO, Mazatrol, and Okuma QSP-200L controls. Familiar with live tooling and the selection of correct speeds, feeds, and fixtures for a variety of materials. Competent in reading and interpreting technical drawings, tolerances, and engineering documentation. Experience with Victor, Hyundai, and Doosan machine tools is advantageous. Proficient in manual inspection tools and ideally CMM inspection techniques. Advanced CAD/CAM programming knowledge (e.g., SolidWorks, hyperMill, Mastercam).
