This is a hands-on role supporting important scientific research while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and care. Working as part of a collaborative team, you will provide expert husbandry, assist with research and surgical activities, and help ensure the smooth and efficient running of the facility, contributing to the delivery of high-quality research in a professional environment. Basic Requirements Minimum of five GCSEs at Grade C/Level 4 or above (or equivalent), including English Language and Mathematics, or equivalent relevant experience. Experience working in an animal research environment, including animal husbandry, environmental enrichment, and surgical techniques involving rabbits, rodents, and aquatic species. Hold a Personal Licence under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA), supported by relevant training or certifications. Knowledge of health and safety requirements, including risk assessments and safe working practices. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Good digital skills, including experience using MS365 and relevant specialist software. Ability to work effectively as part of a team, providing advice and guidance to colleagues and stakeholders. Duties and Responsibilities Provide high-quality animal care, including daily husbandry, welfare monitoring, and breeding colony management in line with required standards. Carry out regulated procedures in accordance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 as a Personal Licence holder. Assist with surgical preparation, including coordinating bookings and preparing equipment. Maintain accurate and detailed records relating to animal health, research activities, and antibody production. Apply technical knowledge to build, adapt, maintain, and repair laboratory equipment and experimental set-ups, supporting refinement of techniques to improve animal welfare. Ensure facilities operate efficiently and in accordance with biosecurity, regulatory, and organisational standards. Plan and organise own workload to support service delivery and research activities. Work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to deliver an effective and high-quality service. Contribute to team decision-making and provide guidance based on experience and knowledge. Monitor and analyse data, trends, and resource usage to support effective facility and research operations. Support continuous improvement through independent research, analysis, and application of best practice.

Service Technician LOCATION: Cambridge SALARY: Competitive REF: ALS 3042 We are looking to recruit a Service Technician to join our team to provide a high level of care and hygiene to laboratory animals used in medical research. The successful candidate will provide a service to maintain the facility and selected areas. You will be responsible for helping with autoclaving of equipment, sterilisation, stock control and supplies. Basic Requirements: 3 GCSE passes or equivalent including General literacy and numeracy Experience working with cleaning machinery and equipment is desirable Knowledge of the use of cleaning chemicals and sterilising instruments would be useful Good oral and written communication skills Practical experience working within a research environment is desirable Experience with health and safety standards and implementation are advantageous Comfortable working alone or within a larger team depending on the task Ability to organise/prioritise workload Follow and maintain a meticulous level of sterilisation protocols including the use of autoclaving equipment. Flexible and adaptable with overtime for evenings and weekend work. Duties and Responsibilities: General cleaning, housekeeping and upkeep of the animal facility. Perform cleaning and sterilisation of animal cages and equipment by operating large washers, autoclaves and fumigation/decontamination chambers. Preparation of procedure rooms/operating theatres and sterilisation of equipment. Disposal of waste material, special waste and animal carcases, in a compliant and safe manner. Carry out basic equipment maintenance, troubleshooting and reports. Follow Standard Operating Procedures and quality assurance purposes to ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and other relevant legislation.
