The General Valuer will be responsible for providing accurate valuations across a diverse range of items, both in-house and on client visits. The role includes cataloguing, liaising with clients, preparing items for sale, and supporting the smooth running of auction events. Auctioneering skills are desirable but not essential; training or mentoring can be offered for the right candidate with interest in this area. Our client is an auction house in the east of England seeking a pro-active Valuer to join their small team. The successful candidate will have previous auction experience as a Valuer with a good all-round knowledge of antiques and collectables. Experience with Jewellery is desirable but not essential. This is a full-time role, but four days per week might be considered for the right candidate. Auctioneering experience is not essential, but a nice-to-have. All auctions are in real life. Please note that occasional Saturday working will be required with time off in lieu. The successful candidate will curate up to three specialist or thematic sales per year, sourcing, valuing, cataloguing and marketing works spanning manuscripts, paintings, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, arms and armour, and related objects from across the Islamic and Indian worlds. This role suits someone with strong academic grounding and proven commercial experience in the field, ideally gained within an auction or gallery environment. They will have excellent knowledge of the market, the ability to build relationships with collectors and dealers, and strong writing and presentation skills. Fluency in a relevant language such as Persian or Arabic is advantageous. Successful candidates will have solid experience managing day-to-day accounting for a small to medium business within the art market and with experience of AML requirements for the art market. Requirements: Considerable relevant experience Relevant accounting degree Experience within the art market Strong experience with Xero Duties and responsibilities: Oversee full-cycle finance operations, including accounts payable and receivable, management accounting and bank reconciliations. Processing VAT returns. Submit overseas (U.S.) Sales Tax filings. Maintain the accounts receivable ledger and managed credit control processes ensuring prompt collections. Generate accurate sales invoices in compliance with tax and contractual terms. Ensure timely and accurate payments to suppliers in accordance with contractual terms. Manage artist/consignor commissions with precision and contractual adherence. Conduct Anti-Money Laundering (AML) checks. Administer payroll, pensions and oversee staff expense reimbursement and company credit card reconciliation processes. Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and rolling cashflow projections. Monitor and improve internal controls, ensuring financial integrity and operational efficiency. Collaborate with external accountants in the preparation and finalisation of year-end accounts. Play a key role in financial process enhancements and liaised with external accountants for audit and reporting.
