We are seeking an exceptional Future Networks Technologist to join our team on a 12-month fixed-term contract (4 days per week), supporting the IUK funded AESTRAM project: AI-orchestrated End-to-End Secured Integration of Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks for Resilient Advanced Manufacturing (AESTRAM). Based in London, you will play a leading role in the research and development of next-generation network architectures, with a particular focus on network and service orchestration across Open and Quantum-Safe Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks (TN/NTN). This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic stakeholder engagement. You will work alongside leading researchers, engineers, industry partners, and academic collaborators, translating complex technical concepts into practical solutions and impactful research outcomes. WHAT YOU'LL DO (Duties) Work closely with senior and highly skilled team members on open future network architectures across the AESTRAM project. Contribute expertise to shape the research directions around future network technologies, focusing on multi-domain service orchestration in 6G, including AI services, and TN/NTN. Actively participate in architecture, functions, and interfaces design within the AESTRAM research project. Conceive, develop, evaluate and defend novel original research ideas around the topics of future open, AI-powered and quantum-safe networking. Consolidate the ideas in the form of publications, simulations, IPRs, and demonstrations. Benchmark & optimise the performance of the E2E Open RAN systems in a cabled and OTA environment across the AESTRAM project using specialised Test & Measurement tools (Test UEs, UE Simulator, Traffic simulator, RF spectrum analyser etc). Using Digital Catapult's advanced future networking/5G testbed facilities to direct and assist in development of the required software and associated demonstration network. Prepare and carry out oral presentations and written reports across the AESTRAM project in technical and progress meetings. Ensure quality deliverables, transfer competences and research results to stakeholders. Requirements A MSc Degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent experience in an industrial research environment. A PhD in a relevant area would be advantageous. In-depth domain knowledge and research experience in two or more of the following areas: TN/NTN, network and service orchestration, telecom AI, Open-RAN, Quantum Safe Networks. Analytical approach on Network optimisation with hands-on experience on optimisation models and tools would be a benefit. Strong communication, interpersonal and documentation skills to produce technical design documents and reports. Experience of using specialised Test & Measurement tools (UE Simulator, Test UE, Data Traffic simulator, Protocol analyser etc.) along with packet capture tools (e.g. tcpdump, wireshark etc.) to execute test suites and reporting. Strong understanding of 3GPP, O-RAN & ETSI standards. Fast learner, highly adaptable, collaborative and capable of working in a fast-paced research environment. Committed and willing to go above and beyond to meet dynamic project requirements. Previous participation in collaborative research projects and practical experience with commercial or testbed network equipment would be advantageous. Reporting to the CTO, the Director of Technology Quantum will play a critical role in leading the Quantum and photonics portfolio of work, defining and driving the technology roadmap for Quantum, photonics and related areas, creating and delivering collaborative research, development and technology translation programmes with university and industry partners and innovators. Our focus is on software, application, algorithm, design, architecture and use cases, and not on hardware development. The role provides an opportunity to both investigate new and emerging quantum technologies with academia and innovators and also experiment with more practical adoption with end users and industry. Direct and enable a high quality programme of research and development in Quantum and photonics, securing funding via R&D projects and supporting commercial opportunities. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including innovators, startups and scaleups, government, academic institutions, industry partners, building a productive network in support of our research ambitions and goals. Represent Digital Catapult at industry events, conferences, and public engagements. Be part of the Technology Research, Development and Innovation leadership team, overseeing the execution and evaluation of activities in programmes, projects and technology exploitation Lead and mentor a diverse team, coach and guide immediate reports, and the Quantum, photonics and related team members across the wider organisation, building capability in Quantum and photonics Supervise and deliver horizon scanning, developing the technology roadmap and plans in Quantum, photonics and related areas, supporting other teams to enable their areas to be similarly well defined in relation to Quantum and photonics. Demonstrable experience defining and delivering technology strategy, horizon scanning, roadmaps and research agendas. Strong understanding of contemporary Quantum and photonics technologies, including Quantum computing (use case, algorithms, optimisation and quantum machine learning); Quantum sensing (solution, product and use case development); Quantum networking (use case and architecture); Photonics (design and use cases). Experience securing collaborative research and innovation funding, including grant-funded programmes. Strong commercial awareness with experience identifying opportunities for technology translation and future commercialisation. Significant experience leading technology research, development and innovation programmes in quantum and photonics, and leading multi-disciplinary technical teams within a research, innovation, technology or R&D environment. Track record in building teams and Quantum and photonics capability, promoting a culture of learning, excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement, and supporting early stage careers.
