The Role In this position, you ll take ownership of the design and development of bespoke mechanical systems and components for cutting edge imaging sensors, test equipment, and associated electronics. Your work will span the full lifecycle from concept generation and materials selection to detailed drawings and delivery ready designs. You ll also design assembly jigs, test fixtures, and transport packaging, ensuring solutions are optimised for manufacture, cost, and lead time. Collaboration is key: you ll work alongside project managers, engineers from multiple disciplines, and production teams to deliver robust and innovative designs that meet demanding technical requirements. Key Responsibilities Lead mechanical design activities across multiple projects, turning specifications into practical solutions. Create detailed design documentation, manufacturing drawings, test plans, and reports. Participate in design reviews and provide input to improve solutions. Troubleshoot technical challenges, assess risks, and deliver practical engineering outcomes. Support process improvement, industrialisation, and best practice in mechanical engineering. Stay current with industry advances to apply new techniques and approaches. About You Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering (Master s preferred). Strong CAD skills (experience with PTC Creo and Windchill desirable). Good understanding of FEA, stress/thermal analysis, and design for extreme environments (shock, vibration, thermal). Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture/assembly. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities. Experience leading projects and delivering high-quality results. Highly beneficial: Chartered status (IMechE or equivalent). Background in space, aerospace, or high-reliability industries. Familiarity with ECSS or MIL-STD standards. Knowledge of requirements management tools (e.g. DFMEA, compliance matrices). For Security Clearance purposes you MUST be a SOLE UK National.
