Design Engineer - Steel Division (Infrastructure Projects) Location: 2 Home / 3 in the office - Manchester Salary: Up to 65,000 About the Client: My client is a well-established main contractor with a strong reputation for delivering complex, large-scale infrastructure projects across the UK. Operating in sectors such as bridges, power generation, utilities, and gas networks , they provide end-to-end solutions on high-profile schemes nationwide. As part of their continued growth, they are expanding their in-house steel division , which plays a critical role in the design and delivery of bespoke steel structures for major infrastructure works. The Opportunity: They are now looking to appoint an experienced Design Engineer to join their Steel Division. This is a key technical role that will support the delivery of structural steelwork across a range of infrastructure projects, from bridge superstructures to power plant frameworks , pipe bridges , and substation support steel . Key Responsibilities: Produce and coordinate detailed steelwork designs from concept through to fabrication and installation. Design steel connections, lifting points, baseplates , and associated components. Work closely with the structural engineering team to ensure compliance with design codes and standards (Eurocodes, BS 5950, etc.). Generate and review detailed fabrication drawings using Tekla Structures or similar. Engage with project managers, site teams, and fabrication workshops to ensure designs are safe, buildable, and efficient . Provide technical support during procurement, manufacture, and construction stages. Contribute to value engineering and innovation across design processes. Assist with temporary works designs where necessary, in relation to steel erection. Experience & Skills Required: Degree-qualified in Structural or Civil Engineering (or equivalent experience). 2+ years of experience in structural steel design within the construction or infrastructure sector. Proficient in Eurocodes and UK steelwork standards. Strong working knowledge of Tekla Structures , AutoCAD, and structural design software (e.g., Tedds, IDEA StatiCa). Confident communicator with the ability to liaise effectively across design, site, and fabrication teams. Knowledge of steel fabrication processes and site erection methods. Desirable: Background working for a main contractor or steel fabricator. Exposure to infrastructure projects - bridges, utilities, power, or gas networks. Project Engineer Location: Manchester - 2 Home / 3 days in the office Salary: 40,000 - 60,000 Role Overview The Project Engineer will be responsible for managing the engineering delivery of multiple structural steelwork projects, ensuring all designs, drawings, calculations, and technical information are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The role acts as the primary technical interface between Hare, clients, consultants, and internal teams, coordinating engineering activities across design, detailing, procurement, fabrication, and site through the full project lifecycle. Key Responsibilities Project & Engineering Management Manage engineering programmes across multiple structural steel contracts. Coordinate engineering resources, drawing schedules, and deliverables in line with project programmes. Maintain cost awareness and support commercial control through efficient engineering delivery. Ensure all engineering outputs meet quality, programme, and contractual requirements. Client & Stakeholder Liaison Act as the main technical point of contact for clients, consulting engineers, and design teams. Coordinate closely with internal departments including project management, fabrication, procurement, and site teams. Attend design meetings, coordination meetings, and site meetings as required. Engineering Deliverables & Information Control Manage the production, checking, issue, and approval of: Structural calculations GA and fabrication drawings Technical submissions and reports Prepare Drawing Registers (e.g. Drawing 001), preliminary material take-offs, and bought-out item schedules. Ensure effective document control and accurate flow of technical information across all teams. Technical Queries, Variations & Reporting Manage Technical Queries (TQs), RFIs, and ITQs, reviewing prior to submission. Coordinate responses with internal teams and external consultants. Support the identification and management of variations. Provide regular engineering progress updates and programme reports. Fabrication, Site & Compliance Ensure engineering outputs are fully aligned with fabrication and site requirements. Attend site visits, inspections, and coordination meetings as required. Ensure compliance with: Company quality systems and procedures NSSS and relevant British / European Standards Project-specific specifications and client requirements Performance Focus Deliver engineering packages within agreed cost and programme targets. Achieve zero non-conformances through robust checking and quality control. Maintain accurate engineering registers, trackers, and project records. Qualifications & Experience HNC minimum in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent). Degree in Civil / Structural Engineering preferred. Associate or Chartered membership of IStructE (or working towards) preferred. Typically 4-10 years' experience in structural steelwork or related construction engineering roles.
