Job Purpose: To support and enhance the educational and social development of pupils with special educational needs (SEN), including those with complex learning difficulties, autism, communication needs, and social, emotional, and mental health needs (SEMH). The HLTA will work under the direction of the class teacher and SENCO, delivering tailored interventions, supporting curriculum access, and leading learning activities across the school. Key Responsibilities: Teaching & Learning Support Plan, prepare, and deliver specific learning activities or interventions for individuals or small groups in line with EHCP outcomes and class objectives. Support the class teacher with differentiated planning, preparation of resources, and adaptation of materials for SEN learners. Lead whole-class sessions in the absence of the teacher, including covering for short-term planned absences. Implement and support behaviour management strategies and contribute to behaviour support plans (BSPs), risk assessments, and EHCP reviews. Promote engagement, independence, and emotional regulation using appropriate strategies, including sensory support and communication aids (e.g., PECs, Makaton, AAC). Pupil Support Establish positive relationships with pupils to foster confidence, resilience, and self-esteem. Provide personal care where necessary, including feeding, toileting, and hygiene support, in line with care plans and safeguarding guidelines. Monitor pupil progress and contribute to assessment and recording systems, providing regular feedback to teachers and parents/carers. Team Collaboration Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists, and external agencies to support pupils learning and development. Mentor and support less experienced TAs or volunteers. Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development relevant to the role. Administrative Duties Maintain accurate records of interventions, progress, and incidents. Assist in the preparation of displays, learning environments, and classroom organisation. Contribute to risk assessments and health and safety procedures as required. Person Specification: Essential HLTA status or equivalent Level 4 qualification (or willingness to work towards this). Experience working with children and young people with SEN, including complex needs and challenging behaviour. Ability to plan, deliver, and assess learning activities under the guidance of a teacher. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team. Ability to remain calm, patient, and empathetic in challenging situations. Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures. Desirable Knowledge of specific SEN strategies, e.g., TEACCH, Team Teach, Makaton, PECS. Experience with alternative communication methods or sensory integration strategies.
