Job Description

Section Engineer

Huddersfield area

12 month rolling contract

£400 - £425 per day

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the technical lead for allocated sections of work, providing engineering support and oversight to subcontractors, operatives, and craftspeople within your area
  • Manage and mentor graduate engineers and apprentices, offering guidance and support to aid in their professional development
  • Undertake setting out and verification of infrastructure installations, ensuring accuracy against design specifications
  • Prepare, review, and manage safe systems of work, including method statements, permits, and quality documents such as ITPs and QRPs
  • Ensure all work and materials comply with project specifications and quality standards
  • Oversee the selection, requisition, and inspection of materials
  • Interpret and manage contract design documents on-site
  • Liaise with consultants, subcontractors, supervisors, planners, quantity surveyors, and the wider workforce to ensure smooth project delivery
  • Coordinate with design teams to resolve technical queries during construction
  • Attend and contribute to regular project and progress meetings
  • Supervise and monitor labour, junior engineers, and subcontractor activity within your section of responsibility
  • Collaborate with the Sub Agent, Foreman, and supply chain partners to proactively address on-site issues and maintain progress
  • Plan and organise plant, labour, and site facilities efficiently to meet deadlines
  • Maintain accurate site records, including diaries, progress reports, and quality documentation
  • Ensure high standards of quality control and site health and safety
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any unexpected technical challenges or site conditions

Requirements:

  • HNC, HND, or degree in Civil Engineering (BSc, MSc, BEng, MEng)
  • Proven experience delivering infrastructure projects, ideally with rail sector involvement. PTS desirable but not essential
  • Valid CSCS card (mandatory)
  • SMSTS qualification preferred
  • Temporary works coordination ticket beneficial
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Confident leading tasks and supervising teams
  • Willingness and ability to mentor junior staff
  • Experience with elements such as earthworks, drainage, structures, surfacing, and temporary works
