We are seeking a highly experienced Market Risk Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support key risk transformation and regulatory initiatives within a leading financial institution. The successful consultant will bring deep functional knowledge of Market Risk, strong quantitative and regulatory understanding, and hands-on experience working with trading, risk, and technology functions to shape and deliver complex change.
This is a delivery-focused, senior SME role suited to individuals who can bridge business, data, and technology - providing domain leadership and practical solutions across market risk functions.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the lead Market Risk SME, advising on methodology, controls, reporting, and system design across multiple risk workstreams.
Provide expert guidance on risk models and calculations, including sensitivities, VaR, stress testing, P&L explain, and backtesting.
Partner with risk, finance, and Front Office stakeholders to interpret regulatory requirements (eg FRTB, Basel III/IV, BCBS 239) and define their business and technical implications.
Drive the design and implementation of market risk data architecture, ensuring consistency, transparency, and regulatory compliance.
Review and validate risk data flows and aggregation processes, identifying gaps and recommending enhancements.
Oversee risk reporting enhancements and ensure outputs meet governance, regulatory, and internal management expectations.
Advise on data quality controls, data lineage, and integration across trading and risk platforms.
Support programme governance, risk model reviews, and route-to-live readiness, ensuring robust delivery and sign-off.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape the target operating model for market risk.
Required Expertise
Extensive experience (10+ years) in Market Risk within Tier 1 banks, financial institutions, or consulting environments.
Deep understanding of risk methodologies (VaR, sensitivities, stress testing, capital, and backtesting).
Proven track record delivering on regulatory programmes such as FRTB, Basel III/IV, BCBS 239, or risk data transformation.
Strong knowledge of risk systems, data models, and reporting frameworks.
Proficiency in SQL, Excel, and data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau) for validation and analysis.
Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, able to influence senior leadership and drive decision-making.
Experience working in Agile and hybrid delivery environments
Understanding of Credit Risk and its integration with Market Risk frameworks.
Familiarity with trading and product control processes across asset classes.
Knowledge of risk data platforms, trade repositories, and model governance.
Awareness of AI and automation opportunities in risk data and reporting.
Strong understanding of change management and business process optimisation.
