Location: England
Salary: Up to 90,000 + benefits

Turner Lovell is currently recruiting for a Principal Civil Design Engineer to join a rapidly expanding engineering design consultant and grid connection contractor. Our client delivers innovative engineering solutions across the power, energy, and infrastructure sectors and is seeking a senior technical leader to oversee complex civil design projects nationwide.

As the Principal Civil Design Engineer, you will take ownership of civil engineering design for multiple electricity substation projects (up to 400kV), from concept through completion. You will provide technical leadership, assure design quality, and coordinate multi-disciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient, and commercially robust solutions across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the civil design of multiple substation projects (up to 400kV) from feasibility through detailed design and delivery.
  • Set technical standards, review and approve key deliverables including drawings, calculations, and specifications for a wide range of civil structures and infrastructure.
  • Coordinate closely with internal design teams, clients, and stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met on time, safely, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Provide design assurance, manage risk, and drive buildable, cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Support bid and tender activities, defining civil scope and providing input on programme and cost.
  • Mentor and guide senior and junior engineers, promoting technical excellence and professional development.


Ideal Background & Skills

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (ICE or equivalent) preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years experience delivering civil design for power transmission, distribution, substations, or related energy/renewables infrastructure.
  • Comprehensive understanding of design processes, CDM regulations, and project delivery from concept to handover.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and MS Office; experience with Civil 3D, Revit, or Navisworks advantageous.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills with a focus on quality, safety, and innovation.
