Job Description

About the Role

An established engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Power System Design Engineer to join its team, supporting the delivery of high-voltage substation and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver power system design packages for HV substations, grid connections, and BESS projects (typically 11-400 kV).
  • Develop Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), equipment layouts, cable schedules, interconnection diagrams, and earthing/bonding designs.
  • Perform power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, harmonic, and dynamic stability analyses.
  • Support grid connection applications, compliance submissions, and modelling for DNO, TO, and NGESO stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical specifications for electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, cables, and earthing systems.
  • Liaise with network operators and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with grid codes, G99, ENA, and relevant national standards.
  • Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Conduct design reviews, maintain adherence to quality assurance processes, and manage deliverables using Procore or equivalent project management systems.
  • Collaborate with Protection, SCADA, Civil, and Construction teams to ensure seamless design integration.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, contributing to ongoing improvement of design processes and standards.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Degree (BEng/MEng) in Electrical or Power Engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in power system design for HV substations, grid connections, or BESS projects.
  • Strong understanding of HV/LV systems, grid code compliance, and UK DNO/TO standards.
  • Proficiency in power system modelling tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, PSCAD, or IPSA.
  • Knowledge of IEC, ENA, and National Grid specifications.
  • Experience working within a multi-disciplinary EPC project environment.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of BESS operation, control philosophy, and grid integration.
  • Experience using Procore, BIM 360, or similar project management platforms.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively working toward professional registration (IET).
  • Understanding of functional safety, interlocking logic, and commissioning procedures.
