The role involves hands-on sewer repairs, maintenance, and installations, ensuring all work meets safety, quality, and compliance standards . Responsibilities: Lead and motivate a small civils team. Plan, allocate, and oversee daily site tasks. Ensure safe working practices and high-quality output. Manage materials, report progress, and liaise with supervisors. Requirements: Experience in sewerage or utilities civils work. Proven team leadership skills. CSCS, Confined Space & Manual Handling certificates (SSSTS/SMSTS preferred). Physically fit and able to work in confined spaces.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who take pride in delivering safe, high-quality work on time and to specification. You will work as part of a site gang, supporting supervisors and site management in completing essential highways works. Key Responsibilities Carry out tasks set by site supervisors and gangers to the required standard. Ensure full understanding of all relevant risk assessments, method statements, and site briefings before commencing work. Operate plant, tools, and equipment safely and carry out routine pre-use checks. Maintain a safe and tidy working environment at all times. Deliver works to programme deadlines while adhering to quality and safety standards. Maximise productivity by effectively managing own working time. Ensure compliance with permits, site instructions, and safety requirements. Report any health & safety concerns, near misses, or close calls promptly to the site supervisor. Actively participate in daily briefings, tool box talks, and safety forums. Key Skills & Requirements Previous experience as a Highways Operative or similar role in civil engineering/highways environment. Good understanding of health & safety requirements on site. Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team. Proactive approach to problem-solving and communication with site management. General Operative The Vacancy Key Responsibilities Site Preparation and Maintenance: Assist in preparing the work site by clearing debris, setting up barriers, and ensuring that all necessary tools and materials are available. Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring that all waste materials are disposed of properly. Assist in setting up and dismantling temporary structures, such as site huts, barriers, and access routes. Trenching and Excavation: Perform manual excavation tasks, including digging trenches for sewerage pipes and manholes. Assist with the safe use of hand tools and power tools for cutting, drilling, and breaking ground. Support the operation of mechanical excavation equipment under supervision. Pipe Laying and Sewer Installation: Assist with the installation, connection, and testing of sewer pipes, ensuring that they are laid to the correct line and level. Help to align pipes and apply jointing materials, ensuring watertight seals. Backfill trenches and compact soil around installed pipes to stabilize them. Manhole Construction and Maintenance: Assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of manholes, including bricklaying, concrete work, and installing manhole covers. Ensure that manholes are built according to specifications and are secure and accessible. Health and Safety Compliance: Follow all health and safety protocols, including wearing appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times. Participate in safety briefings and toolbox talks, understanding the risks associated with working in confined spaces, near live utilities, and in challenging environments. Report any safety hazards, incidents, or near-misses to the Civils Ganger or Supervisor immediately. Support for Equipment Operation: Assist in the operation of small plant machinery and equipment under the direction of qualified operators. Help with loading and unloading materials, tools, and equipment from vehicles. Carry out routine checks and maintenance of tools and equipment, reporting any faults or damages. Communication and Teamwork: Work closely with other operatives, supervisors, and subcontractors to ensure smooth and efficient site operations. Follow instructions from the Civils Ganger or Supervisor precisely and complete tasks within set timeframes. Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and ensure the safe execution of work. Quality Control: Assist in ensuring that all work is completed to the required standards and specifications set by Southern Water. Check that materials used are of the correct type and quality, reporting any discrepancies to the Civils Ganger. Help identify any potential issues with the work being carried out, suggesting improvements where necessary. Emergency Response: Be prepared to assist in emergency situations, such as responding to bursts or leaks in sewerage systems. Participate in emergency drills and be aware of the procedures for evacuating the site safely Required Skills and Qualifications Experience: Previous experience in construction or civil engineering work, particularly in utilities or sewerage projects, is advantageous but not always required. Identify technical issues and escalate appropriately. Ensure works are delivered to programme, maintaining resources to meet cost and time targets. Role Requirements: Proven experience in earthworks and civil engineering packages. Competent in managing direct workforce, plant, and subcontractors. Strong understanding of site health and safety management. IT literate with good record-keeping skills. Full manual UK driving licence Flexible and willing to travel across Scotland.
