What we do Our Bakkavor business in Bo'ness, based near Falkirk, specialises in the production of fresh, high quality salad products working primarily with premium retailers. To give a feel for the scale of manufacturing in Bo'ness we produce over 70million salad based meals and side dishes from our 2 manufacturing facilities employing over 1200 people in the town. About the role In this busy and exciting role, you will bring your engineering skills and problem-solving abilities to our team to help maintain and optimise our food and drink processing and packaging assets. You'll play a key part in keeping production running smoothly, safely, and efficiently - ensuring that our equipment performs at its best to deliver high-quality products for our customers. You'll be involved in a wide range of engineering activities, from planned and predictive maintenance to responding to breakdowns and implementing improvements. Working closely with operational teams, you'll use your technical expertise to diagnose faults, carry out repairs, and contribute to continuous improvement projects that enhance efficiency, reliability, and profitability Role Accountabilities Prepare and carry out maintenance work on food and drink processing and packaging equipment. Conduct planned and predictive maintenance to optimise performance and prevent downtime. Respond promptly to breakdowns, carrying out repairs or corrective actions as required. Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, automation, and pneumatic faults. Support operational teams with machinery changeovers, set-ups, and adjustments. Manufacture or repair component parts to maintain equipment reliability. Contribute to continuous improvement projects and technical performance reviews. Identify and implement engineering solutions to improve efficiency and profitability. Maintain accurate maintenance and engineering documentation. Ensure maintenance tools and equipment are available, safe, and well maintained. Support and mentor team members to develop technical skills and competence. Participate in internal and external audits to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. About You You'll have (or be working towards) Level 2 Maths and English and a recognised Engineering Apprenticeship qualification, such as a C&G or EAL NVQ Level 3/4 or OAL FDEM Diploma. Within your first year, you'll complete the current IET Wiring Regulations, a Level 2 Food Safety Qualification, CMMS training, and contractor control requirements, developing multi-skilled capability with an electrical bias over time. You'll bring strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills, with a good understanding of Safety, Health and Environmental procedures. Experience in fault finding, planning maintenance work, using IT systems, and following site SOPs is essential. Knowledge of both mechanical and electrical systems - such as hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, PLCs, and sensors - will be key, along with an understanding of asset performance and spare parts management. Desirable experience includes IOSH Managing Safely, FMCG background, and exposure to continuous improvement, condition-based monitoring, and reliability techniques. About the role We have a fantastic opportunity for a Maintenance Engineer to join our expanding team and site. The Maintenance Engineer will conduct planned and predictive maintenance to prevent issues occurring. Your role will lead or support the operational teams with machinery change overs and set ups. Working with other teams, you will contribute to technical performance reviews and continuous improvement activities. Our Maintenance Engineers work as part of a team or standalone, depending on the task. Application of Safety, Health and Environmental legislation and procedures Planning works and writing reports. Verify assets meet performance criteria after work. Reading and adhering to site SOPs. CMMS experience (achieve within 12 months). Electrical bias Experience in the following would be advantageous - Mechanical principles, F&D assets, welding, machining, turning, hydraulic, pneumatic & thermodynamics systems and / or, electrical principals, motors, motor control circuits, motion control, encoders, PLCs, sensors. Working within a service engineering team supporting pharmaceutical manufacturers in the UK with a particular focus on the South. Attending a low number of customer calls as each case can be extremely complicated and time consuming. On rare occasions operating as part of an installation team to complete new equipment installations, commissioning and user training. Working to preventative maintenance and installation work which is often booked 2-3 months in advance, whilst also reacting to more pressing breakdowns and repairs. Working with the engineering planner to coordinate activities and movements. Conducting routine service and calibration work, alongside more reactive maintenance, including fault finding, problem resolution and repair. Completing service visit reports. About You The ideal candidate will possess at least 2 years of service engineering / technician experience, gained working on complex automated pharmaceutical equipment, including robotics, production/processing, materials handling, packaging and filling machinery. Candidates must speak fluent English and be multiskilled with a mechanical focus. You must be comfortable travelling in the UK and spending nights away from home when needed. A degree level education is beneficial, but not essential. It is, however, essential you have a logical and methodical approach to finding faults and be comfortable working on high value automated machinery.
