Job Description

We are currently looking for a setting out engineer for an electrical contractor we have working in Newcastle. The role is 3 days a week, which days you want to work are flexible. Contract is 4 months long.

The Role

As a Setting Out Engineer, you will be crucial in translating design plans into accurate site implementation. You will work closely with the site management team, designers, and our electrical installation teams to ensure all works are carried out safely, on time, and to the required specifications. This role requires a blend of technical surveying expertise and a strong understanding of electrical infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Precise Setting Out: Perform accurate surveying and setting out using modern equipment (Robotic Total Stations, GPS, laser levels) for foundations, utility routes (HV/LV), containment systems, and structural elements.
  • Design Interpretation: Interrogate and transfer setting out data from 2D and 3D CAD designs and technical drawings, resolving technical queries and escalating design issues where necessary.
  • Quality Assurance (QA): Conduct regular quality checks and surveys, maintain comprehensive red-line and as-built records, and ensure all works meet design tolerances and project specifications.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Prepare and manage all necessary site documentation, including progress reports, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and handover documentation.
  • Subcontractor Coordination: Liaise with site management and other subcontractors, ensuring seamless coordination of works and adherence to the project programme.
  • Health & Safety: Implement and enforce strict health and safety protocols, including producing and reviewing Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS) and permits to work.

Essential Criteria

  • Proven experience as a Setting Out Engineer or Site Engineer, ideally within civils, utilities, or the energy sector.
  • Proficiency with surveying instruments, including Robotic Total Stations and GPS equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations specific to construction and electrical installations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex electrical and civil engineering drawings.
  • Valid CSCS card is essential.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organisational skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant qualification in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Surveying.
  • Experience on projects requiring security clearance (e.g., nuclear, MOD).
  • Experience with Tier 1 contractors or working on high-value industrial projects.
