Assistant Ecologist

Location: Birmingham, predominantly site based with travel across UK

Contract: Permanent

Hours: 40 hours, nights, weekends and days

RSS Infrastructure is seeking an Assistant Ecologist to support our growing Managed Environments team. The successful candidate will play a key role in conducting ecological surveys, producing reports, and providing ecological advice, toolbox talks, watching briefs and support to our vegetation management operatives and clients.

The role will involve working on various projects across Wales and England, focusing on ECoW work, UK habitat surveys, BNG and protected species surveys.

We are a small team and require someone who wants to learn and help with all aspects of projects, from talking to clients and managing their requirements, turning these into quotes, carrying out the work, and finally producing reports for them.

Responsibilities for the Role

• Ecological Clerk of Works, ensuring operatives remain compliant to methodologies and licenses.
• Conduct ecological surveys and assessments in accordance with relevant legislation, guidelines, and CIEEM best practice standards.
• Produce high-quality ecological reports, including permits to clear, survey reports, mitigation strategies, BNG Metrics and habitat management plans.
• Provide ecological advice and support to clients, including liaising with statutory bodies, local authorities, and other stakeholders.
• Manage projects effectively, ensuring deadlines are met and work is delivered to a high standard.
• Undertake research and keep up to date with developments in ecological science and legislation.
• Contribute to the development of proposals and tenders for new work
• Undertake training and attend courses to develop expertise in a chosen area.

Requirements for the role

• Experience in undertaking Ecological Clerk of Works roles.
• Experience working in an ecological role, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality work.
• Experience in conducting protected species surveys, including bats, great crested newts, dormice, and reptiles.
• A good understanding of relevant legislation, including the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations.
• Excellent report writing and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to non-technical audiences.
• Strong project management and organisational skills.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Willingness and flexibility to undertake evening or weekend shifts,
