Interim Health and Safety Lead (Projects)Hybrid Role

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Interim Health and Safety Lead (Projects) to oversee and support health and safety compliance across construction, maintenance, and facilities projects within a busy campus environment in Central London. The successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining a safe working environment for staff, students, contractors and visitors during ongoing construction projects.
Key Responsibilities (Summary)- Provide expert health and safety advice across a diverse capital projects programme, including minor works and fit-outs, refurbishments (including heritage buildings), infrastructure works and medium to large-scale new build projects.
- Identify and interpret relevant construction health and safety legislation and ensure alignment with organisational values, legal obligations and industry best practice.
- Monitor compliance with CDM 2015 Regulations and support the client duties under the legislation.
- Promote a strong, visible health and safety culture through regular site engagement, behaviour-based safety leadership and effective communication with all project stakeholders.
- Embed "Safety in Design" principles early within the design and planning stages of projects.
- Advise on contractor health and safety risk assessments, pre-start reviews and risk workshops.
- Monitor and review construction site safety performance through audits, inspections and clear reporting of findings.
- Lead or support incident investigations, identifying root causes and practical recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Identify trends in unsafe behaviours or recurring risks and develop targeted interventions to improve safety performance.
- Deliver inductions, toolbox talks and health and safety briefings tailored to the sensitivities of working within a live, occupied campus environment.
- Work collaboratively with internal health and safety, estates, fire safety, asbestos, sustainability and inclusive environments teams to ensure a coordinated approach to safe project delivery.
- Provide line management and professional oversight for an Interim Site Health & Safety Advisor.
Key RequirementsQualifications & Professional Status- Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH), with a strong commitment to ongoing CPD (e.g. IOSH Blueprint).
- NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction Certificate.
Experience & Skills- Strong client-side construction health and safety experience.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a complex, occupied environment.
- Strong analytical, planning, problem-solving and negotiation skills.
- Ability to make sense of complex or incomplete information and provide clear, pragmatic advice.
