A specialist independent building services consultancy has, due to planned expansion, an immediate requirement for a high-end intermediate / senior level building services design engineer to join their design team in their Birmingham offices. hybrid remote working available. They work in a wide variety of project sectors including, general commercial, high-end residential, educational, health and MOD. Other responsibilities for this varied and challenging Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role will include providing direction and support to fitters, electricians and other engineers within the team as required, and undertaking visits to customer sites as appropriate to fully understand the customer requirements and to obtain measurements for all dimensions, drawings, site layouts and other considerations, and will document and communicate all such requirements to the customer and internal staff respectively. You will assess and improve design concepts along with a team at sales quotation stage to reduce risks, costs, lead times and be skilled in identifying key risks and assist in compiling plans for trials to reduce them. You will obtain all parts, samples and drawings necessary in advance to ensure these can be checked and used through the design phase and will check the design work produced by other designers to ensure accuracy of design work, as well as conducting project reviews with customers on a periodic basis and reporting on the status of each project whilst constructing and maintaining a comprehensive Technical Construction File (TCF) which includes manuals, risk assessments, mechanical parts list and drawings. South East / Cambridge / Bristol Key Responsibilities : Lead the design of subsea technology combining functions such as breathing gases, fluids, electrical power, communication, hydraulics, and pneumatics, for seismic, defence, subsea technology (e.g., Diving) Select and size functional components (hoses, cables, optical fibres), and determine layup, insulation and jacket materials, braiding, armouring, and overall configuration to meet customer specifications, industry standards, and in-house requirements. Write test specifications and qualification procedures for the subsea scenarios such as tension, torsion, compression, and cyclic bending, when required. Provide technical support to production teams during manufacturing to ensure quality and conformity to design. Investigate and resolve cable-related field failures or performance issues, implementing robust design improvements. Qualifications and Experience : Bachelor s or higher degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics, or similar Experienced senior engineering designer using 2D CAD or 3DCAD / and /or solidworks Strong understanding of subsea technology, including seismic energy, renewable, and marine/diving applications in high-pressure environments. Sound knowledge of electrical theory (voltage stress, resistance, voltage drop, current rating, and heating effects), hydraulics/pneumatics (pressure drop, fluid mechanics), and mechanical engineering (materials, stress/strain, fatigue). Understanding of electrical cable design and construction, including cable geometry, helix angles, lay-lengths, and copper specifications. Proficient in 2D CAD software (preferably AutoCAD); proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks) advantageous. Preferred: Exposure to ISO 9001 quality systems and experience in corrective action resolution.
