Associate Flood Modeller Bristol An established, global Engineering and Environmental Consultancy is looking to bring in an Associate-level Flood Modeller to strengthen their growing water and flood risk team in Bristol. With a strong and varied pipeline across both public and private sector clients, this is a key role within a team delivering complex, high-impact flood risk and hydraulic modelling projects across the UK. This position offers more than a typical modelling role. Sitting just below senior leadership, the successful individual will act as a key support to the team lead, taking on day-to-day responsibility for technical delivery, team coordination and project oversight. It's very much a step-up opportunity for someone ready to move beyond pure modelling into a broader leadership position, with a clear pathway into more senior responsibilities over time. The role will see you providing technical leadership across a wide range of flood modelling projects, overseeing the development, execution and review of hydraulic and hydrological models to ensure outputs meet the highest quality standards and regulatory requirements. You'll be guiding projects from early concept through to submission, working closely with clients and ensuring alignment with Environment Agency standards and UK best practice. Technically, you'll remain hands-on where needed, leading and reviewing complex models using software such as Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, ESTRY and InfoWorks ICM. You'll apply FEH methodologies, rainfall-runoff modelling and flood frequency analysis, while also interpreting outputs and translating them into clear, actionable insights for both technical and non-technical audiences. A key part of the role will be quality assurance and governance. You'll be responsible for reviewing and signing off models, data inputs and reports, implementing robust QA/QC processes and ensuring consistency and auditability across all modelling work. This is a role for someone confident in their technical ability and comfortable taking ownership of final outputs. Alongside technical delivery, there's a strong leadership element. You'll be mentoring and supporting junior and mid-level modellers, helping to develop capability within the team while also assisting with workload management and day-to-day team coordination. You'll play an important role in easing pressure on senior leadership, helping to keep projects moving and standards high. There is also an opportunity to get involved in business development activities. Supporting bid preparation, contributing to proposals and helping to shape future workstreams will form part of the role, making it well-suited to someone looking to broaden their experience beyond delivery into the commercial side of Consultancy work. They're looking for someone degree-qualified in a relevant discipline, with strong experience in flood modelling and a background in leading or checking technical delivery. Proven experience using industry-standard software and carrying out QA and sign-off of models is essential. A solid understanding of UK policy and regulatory requirements is expected, along with the ability to mentor others and manage multiple projects effectively. Chartered status (CIWEM or similar) would be advantageous but is not essential. Senior / Principal / Associate Director Flood Modeller/Hydrology UK wide 75,000 plus benefits Exceptional opportunities exist with this leading consultancy who continue to grow their water group across the country. We are keen to hear from Senior to Associate Director level individuals with strong Flood Modelling/Hydrology experience. At Senior/Principal level you will lead and manage commissions, sign off modelling reporting, manage budgets as well as change control and mentor modellers. The Associate Director will act as Project Director on key commissions, lead client relationships and work-winning, set modelling governance standards across the team and oversee portfolio performance. The main focus surrounds the leadership and management and the delivery of hydrology and hydraulic modelling commissions (1D/2D fluvial, tidal and surface water) to support planning, design and construction. Providing technical direction, managing programme/budget/risk/QA, coordinate multi-disciplinary inputs, and acted as the key client interface for modelling work streams. In more detail the role will be to:- Lead and manage modelling projects end-to-end: define scope and methodology, set programme, manage budget, control risk, and deliver to agreed QA/QMS standards. Lead and manage hydrology inputs: catchment assessment, rainfall/flow estimation, hydrograph derivation, climate change allowances, and clear documentation of assumptions and uncertainty. Lead and coordinate model build, verification and scenario testing (e.g., climate change, breach/blockage, sensitivities) ensuring outputs are fit for purpose. Provide technical direction on data requirements, boundary conditions, model schematisation, mesh strategy, time step selection, roughness/structures representation, stability/performance and optimisation. Interpret and communicate results into clear, decision-ready advice for clients and design teams (mitigation optioneering, levels/FFL strategy, safe access/egress, residual risk, exceedance routing, floodplain compensation concepts where applicable). Produce and sign-off technical reports/appendices suitable for regulator review and planning/design submissions; respond to technical queries and challenge. Lead and manage stakeholder engagement with EA/LLFAs/LPAs and other technical reviewers (method agreement, meetings, review responses). Coordinate interfaces with drainage, civils, highways, geotechnical and planning teams to ensure consistent assumptions and integrated outcomes. Resource-plan and delegate tasks; mentor junior modellers; maintain consistent standards, templates, and auditable file/version control. Contribute to bids: scope, methodology, programme, assumptions, risks and fee inputs; identify follow-on opportunities. For your part you will possess:- Strong UK consultancy experience leading hydrology and hydraulic modelling projects, including delivery governance (scope/programme/budget/risk/QA). Demonstrable hydrology competence: flow estimation and hydrograph development; confident selection of methods appropriate to catchment type, data availability and study purpose; able to communicate uncertainty and sensitivity clearly. Strong hydraulic modelling understanding (stability, mesh/timestep, roughness, structures representation, boundary conditions, calibration/validation where possible). Confident client-facing communicator with excellent technical writing and project management discipline. Advanced capability in one or more of: TUFLOW, Flood Modeller, InfoWorks ICM. Strong GIS skills (QGIS/ArcGIS) for data preparation and mapping outputs. Desirable: hydrology tools familiarity (e.g., ReFH2, WINFAP, FEH methods or equivalent), plus Python/data processing and CAD familiarity.
