Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - Building Services (Critical Systems)

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a leading building services consultancy working within a specialist critical systems team.
This role offers the chance to lead the delivery of technically complex mechanical building services projects, with a strong focus on Stage 4 detailed design and high-performance engineering solutions.
The successful Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will play a key role in technical leadership, project delivery and team coordination, contributing to innovative and high-quality building services designs across critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the delivery of mechanical building services design projects
- Producing and reviewing Stage 4 detailed design documentation
- Developing HVAC system designs, calculations and technical specifications
- Providing technical leadership across project teams and design delivery
- Collaborating with electrical engineers, structural engineers and architects
- Supporting BIM coordination and multidisciplinary design integration
- Ensuring designs meet industry standards, regulations and client requirements
- Managing project delivery in line with programme, budget and quality targets
- Mentoring and supporting junior and intermediate engineers
Requirements
To be considered for this Principal Mechanical Design Engineer role, candidates should have:
- Proven experience working as a Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer within building services
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems and mechanical design principles
- Experience delivering projects across RIBA Stage 4 detailed design
- Experience working within consultancy or multidisciplinary engineering environments
- Strong leadership, communication and coordination skills
- Ability to manage technical delivery and project teams
Desirable:
- Experience working on critical systems or mission-critical environments
- Progression towards or achievement of Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
- Experience using Revit or BIM software
