Job Description

Our Edinburgh based client are seeking a talented and driven Mechanical Design Engineer to join their hardware development team. This role is ideal for someone with a solid foundation in mechanical design and product development, who is ready to take ownership of projects and contribute to the design and manufacturing of innovative hardware solutions.

* Proficiency in Creo CAD Software is required to be successful in this role.

My client offers a 4 day, hybrid working week with core office days being Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

What you'll do

  • Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for hardware products, from concept through production within budget and timescales.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using Creo (SolidWorks and Fusion 360 would be an additional bonus).
  • Perform tolerance analysis, material selection, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical engineers, industrial designers, and manufacturing teams.
  • Conduct prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs.
  • Support the transition of designs from prototype to mass production, including supplier engagement and quality assurance.
  • Analyse mechanical failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain documentation and version control of design files and specifications.

We're looking for someone who has

  • Product depth - combining hardware/electronics/optics and standalone product delivery.
  • Proven success in mechanical design, preferably in a commercial hardware development environment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (eg, SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion 360).
  • Experience with prototyping techniques (eg, 3D printing, CNC machining).
  • Familiarity with thermal, structural, and vibration analysis.
  • Experience of manufacturing processes such as injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, and die casting.

Desirable

  • Experience with simulation tools.
  • Knowledge of electronics packaging and integration.
  • Experience with PLM.
  • Exposure to regulatory standards and compliance (eg, CE, UL).
  • Experience working in Agile or fast-paced product development cycles.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and able to deal with multiple issues simultaneously.
  • Conscientious and hardworking individual willing to take responsibility for ensuring activities are completed in the required time frame.
  • Delivery focused, with a proven track record in working in similar planning environments.
