Research Engineer, Agentic Critical-Systems Cyber-Security
THE ALAN TURING INSTITUTE
The Role This Research Engineer role sits within The Alan Turing Institute s Defence and National Security programme and focuses on designing, building and evaluating LLM-driven agentic systems to strengthen the cyber resilience of critical national infrastructure, particularly legacy operational technology and industrial control systems that cannot easily be patched or upgraded. The postholder will develop autonomous hardening and monitoring capabilities, create realistic digital twin and simulation environments, run robust large-scale evaluations, and produce high-quality research software, technical outputs, and publications, while working closely with multidisciplinary experts across AI, cyber security and critical systems. It s a highly applied research role suited to someone excited by combining machine learning, software engineering and cyber security to solve complex real-world resilience challenges with national importance. Your Profile We re looking for a technically strong and collaborative research engineer with a solid grounding in AI, machine learning, cyber or information security, computer science, engineering, or a related field, ideally educated to Master s level or with equivalent experience. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience building LLM-powered agentic or tool-calling systems, strong scientific software development skills in Python and related frameworks and a track record of delivering practical research or engineering outputs with measurable impact. They ll be comfortable working across disciplines, communicating complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences and operating with a high degree of autonomy while contributing positively to a team environment. Experience with network security, cyber-physical systems, virtualisation, OT/ICS environments and research publications would be especially valuable, as would a thoughtful, evidence-led approach and eligibility for Security Check clearance. How You Will Make an Impact Collaboratively design, build and maintain agentic, AI systems and evaluation suites that support CNI cyber resilience and legacy software hardening against known vulnerabilities. Develop virtualisation based digital twin environments and implement techniques for assuring operational continuity in the context of CNI. Head of Data Science & AI
iwoca Ltd
Head of Data Science & AI Hybrid in London, United Kingdom We're looking for a Head of Data Science & AI You'll lead iwoca's data science function - a group building probabilistic and statistical models that make real-time lending decisions. You'll also be a key part of how iwoca embeds AI across the wider business: setting the pace yourself, and raising capability beyond your direct team. The company Small businesses move fast. Opportunities often don't wait, and cash flow pressures can appear overnight. To keep going, and growing, SMEs need finance that's as flexible and responsive as they are. That's why we built iwoca. Our smart technology, data science and five-star customer service ensures business owners can act with the speed, confidence and control they need, exactly when it's needed. We've already cleared the way for 100,000 businesses with more than £4 billion in funding. Our passionate team is driven to help even more SMEs succeed, through access to better finance and other services that make running a business easier. Our ultimate mission is to support one million SMEs in their defining moments, creating lasting impact for the communities and economies they drive. The team iwoca's data scientists build probabilistic and statistical models that make lending decisions in real time, support forecasting, and shape commercial strategy. Their work is deployed in production code and has direct commercial consequences - it's more than exploratory analysis. The function is now embedding AI into how that work gets done. Successfully leading it will require close collaboration with engineering, product, and commercial teams. The role As Head of Data Science & AI, you'll shape how a technically sophisticated team works - and influence how the wider business adopts AI. Doing that well requires a deep understanding of the modelling work: where AI genuinely changes the work, where it speeds things up, and where a different approach is better. You'll judge what's actually possible with these tools - and challenge the assumptions when the rationale isn't clear. iwoca's data scientists build probabilistic ML models on credit and commercial data, deployed in production, making real-time lending decisions across lending, product, operations, and strategy. The group has approximately 25 data scientists, split across a central team and smaller groups aligned to specific products or domains. You'll report to one of iwoca's co-founders, who is also a data scientist. AI enablement and adoption You'll set the standard for how AI is used across the group - establishing practices that make adoption safe and repeatable, and creating the conditions for a technically sophisticated group to advance together. Strategic direction You'll influence where the group invests its resources - deciding what to model, where AI accelerates the work, and where a lighter approach is more effective. You'll shape commercial and product decisions by making analytical trade-offs legible to senior stakeholders, and work with team leads to plan and prioritise across multiple streams. People and team You'll develop the people around you - raising capability across the group through clear standards, direct coaching, and a genuine investment in how data scientists grow. You'll spot where the gaps are and help close them. You'll also own hiring, shaping how the group assesses and develops talent as it grows. Commercial opportunity and coordination You'll spot commercial opportunities across the business - where modelling or AI can change outcomes - and work with Engineering, Product, and Operations teams to act on them. You'll represent the group in discussions that shape lending, risk, and product decisions, explaining assumptions, highlighting risks, and helping senior stakeholders act on analytical insight. The requirements Essential High AI agency: You actively experiment with AI in your analytical and technical workflows. You use tools like Claude Code, Codex, or similar to build, automate, and accelerate substantive work. You have a clear view on how AI changes what a data science team does and a track record of raising capability across the people around you, not just your own output. Transformation track record: You have led a meaningful shift in how an analytical or data science team works. You are comfortable navigating resistance, building adoption across different types of people, and making change persist beyond your direct involvement. Technical background: You have a background in probability, statistics, or a related quantitative field, with hands on experience building and overseeing probabilistic ML models on structured commercial or financial data. Production experience: You have managed the full lifecycle of models in production - deploying, monitoring, and retiring them. You are comfortable coordinating chains of model dependencies across different teams. Commercial acumen: You understand how modelling supports business decisions and know when to make trade offs between depth, delivery time, and value. Strategic leadership: You have experience setting data science strategy, aligning work with commercial goals, and translating technical modelling for senior stakeholders so they can act on it. People and team: You have experience managing a data science team, setting clear standards, and developing people - including having direct conversations about where the gap is and how to close it. Bonus: Domain experience: You have worked in credit risk, lending, or customer lifetime value modelling. Function scale: You have led a data science team of 20 or more people across multiple teams. R&D and forecasting: You have experience shaping a modelling agenda, including probabilistic or long term forecasting work. Industry profile: You have represented a data science team externally - industry events, publications, or advisory roles. The salary We expect to pay from £120,000 to £170,000 for this role. But, we're open minded, so definitely include your salary goals with your application. We routinely benchmark salaries against market rates, and run quarterly performance and salary reviews. The culture At iwoca, the best idea wins. We model our culture on independent thinking, challenging untested logic, and evidence based decisions. We prioritise learning and growth, and give people the autonomy to develop in the direction that makes them most effective. We're a tech company and believe in the power of AI to help us work faster and better. We provide the infrastructure where every iwocan always has access to the best models and where those models have access to all of our data. We will help our people to learn how to use and grow with the new tools available to them. The offices We put a lot of effort into making iwoca a great place to work: Offices in London, Leeds, Berlin, and Frankfurt with plenty of drinks and snacks. Events and community led groups, including running groups, padel, and monthly ping pong and pool competitions. The benefits Flexible working hours. Medical insurance from Vitality, including discounted gym membership. A private GP service (separate from Vitality) for you, your partner, and your dependents. 25 days' holiday per year, an extra day off for your birthday, the option to buy or sell an additional five days of annual leave, and unlimited unpaid leave. A one month, fully paid sabbatical after four years. Instant access to external counselling and therapy sessions for team members that need emotional or mental health support. 3% Pension contributions on total earnings. An employee equity incentive scheme. Generous parental leave and a nursery tax benefit scheme to help you save money. Electric car scheme and cycle to work scheme. Two company retreats a year: we've been to France, Italy, Spain, and further afield. And to make sure we all keep learning, we offer: A learning and development budget for everyone. Principal Ecological Consultant
Hardgate Consulting
Principal Ecological Consultant (Senior or Associate would work as well) Ideally London, Bristol or Warrington 40-65k depending on level and experience A leading UK-based independent environmental consultancy, underpinned by a growing team of experts in environmental policy, strategy, design, and assessment are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Senior, Principal or Associate Director Ecologist to work as part of our team of around 18 ecological specialists based in the UK. This is a new and exciting role offering the opportunity to play a key part in the delivery of large-scale ecological projects across the UK. The role and title will be tailored to the experience and strengths of the successful candidate, from Senior Ecologist through to Associate Director level position which is ideally suited to an experienced ecologist with a strong background in managing and technically delivering complex projects, particularly within the DCO and NSIP sector, including onshore wind, ground mounted solar, and major residential or commercial developments. The role will be primarily focused on project management and technical delivery, with responsibility for overseeing ecological inputs from feasibility through to consent. While field survey work will form part of the role, it is anticipated that this will not be a significant or routine component, and the emphasis will instead be on coordination, review, interpretation and reporting of survey data and project delivery. You will lead and manage ecological projects and workstreams, liaising closely with clients, planning consultants, engineers, landscape architects and sub-consultants. Responsibilities will include programme and budget management, technical leadership, quality assurance of outputs, and contribution to fee proposals and tenders. You will be expected to author, review and sign off technical reports, with a particular focus on Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments. Experience in Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) and/or DCO documentation would be highly desirable. Although not field-focused, you should retain the capability to undertake and oversee ecological surveys where required, including UKHab habitat surveys and preferably one or more protected species disciplines. Strong ornithological and/or botanical skills would be advantageous, particularly in the context of large infrastructure and renewable energy projects. We believe that environmental consultancy should place ecology at the heart of development design. You will therefore be expected to think strategically and creatively, working collaboratively with landscape designers and other disciplines to embed ecological mitigation, enhancement and compensation measures into development proposals. This will include shaping solutions that meet Biodiversity Net Gain requirements while also contributing to wider green infrastructure objectives, such as flood risk reduction, climate resilience and air quality improvements. This is an exceptional opportunity to join the business at an exciting stage of growth. You will be a core member of the team, playing a key role in shaping and delivering our ecological work. We offer a friendly and supportive working environment, with one-to-one mentoring and professional development from experienced colleagues, alongside access to external training where required. As an independent environmental consultancy we are very non-corporate with a very flexible approach to how we operate. We believe in the person fit first and are keen to fit the role to the person rather than change what attracted us to you. Skills and experience we are looking for Essential: Substantial experience within an ecological consultancy, with a proven track record of working on medium to large-scale or complex projects, such as DCO/NSIP schemes, onshore wind, ground mounted solar, or major residential or commercial developments. Ability to operate effectively at Senior to Associate Director level, taking responsibility for the technical delivery and day-to-day management of ecological projects or workstreams. Strong understanding of the UK planning system and environmental assessment process, including leading or significantly contributing to Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments. Experience of managing ecological inputs to projects, including coordinating survey programmes, reviewing technical outputs, and ensuring work is delivered to programme, budget and quality expectations. Sound working knowledge of UKHab methodology and protected species surveys, with the ability to oversee, interpret and quality-assure survey work, and to undertake field surveys where required. Willingness and ability to undertake occasional site-based surveys or monitoring, recognising that fieldwork will form a relatively small part of the role. Strong understanding of UK wildlife legislation and its practical application to development-led projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, proportionate and defensible reports, and to communicate confidently with clients and project teams. Experience of working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including planners, engineers, landscape architects and other specialists. Competence in the use of GIS and mapping tools to support reporting and project delivery. High level of proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Degree (BSc or higher) in ecology or a related environmental discipline. Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. A proactive and solutions-focused approach to ecological mitigation, enhancement and design, with an interest in integrating biodiversity and wider green infrastructure benefits into development proposals. Desirable Direct experience of DCO/NSIP projects, particularly within the renewable energy or major infrastructure sectors. Experience of Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA), including screening and appropriate assessment. Demonstrable client-facing experience, including acting as a key point of contact and engaging with planners, legal teams and statutory consultees. Experience of preparing or contributing to fee proposals, tenders and scopes of work. Experience of mentoring or supporting junior staff, and contributing to team development. One or more protected species survey licences. Botanical and/or ornithological expertise, particularly relevant to large-scale developments.
