Hays Technology
Director of Strategy and Architecture
Hays Technology Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Director of Strategy & Architecture Stevenage 150,000 + car allowance & bonus Hybrid - 1 day a week Your new company I am working on behalf of a large, privately-owned infrastructure services organisation that plays a critical role in delivering essential services across the UK. Operating at scale, the business supports a workforce of over 10,000 people and is embedded across sectors including energy, water, transport and telecommunications. The organisation is at a pivotal point in its evolution. Having established a strong operational footprint, it is now accelerating its focus on group-wide transformation, investing heavily in its technology landscape, operating model, and long-term strategic capabilities. This is not a business maintaining the status quo; it is one actively reimagining how it operates, how it leverages technology, and how it positions itself for future growth. Your new role This is a high-impact leadership role for an individual who can build architectural capability in an environment that is evolving quickly and investing seriously in its future technology landscape. The remit is not simply to govern architecture in the traditional sense, but to establish the foundations, create the right level of discipline and ensure that technology strategy develops in a way that supports long-term business growth. At its core, the role is about creating a structure where greater maturity is needed. The successful individual will be responsible for defining architecture principles, standards and roadmaps, while also remaining close enough to delivery to modernise systems, address capability gaps, and improve integration and automation across the estate. It is a position for someone who can operate strategically, but who is equally comfortable being hands-on when required. The broader mandate is to create an environment that can support scalable growth. That means making sure technology decisions are not just right for today, but will stand up to the demands of tomorrow, all while balancing an active change agenda and helping shape a more cohesive future state. Data, AI and emerging technologies are expected to play an increasingly important role in that journey, so this will suit someone who understands how to use architecture as an enabler of competitive advantage rather than simply a control function. From a profile perspective, this is likely to appeal to an experienced enterprise architecture leader who has worked in a complex or rapidly scaling organisation and has a track record of putting proper frameworks in place in environments where standards, governance or maturity have previously been inconsistent. The role requires broad architectural depth across applications, data, infrastructure, integration, cloud, security and AI/ML, alongside the judgement to know where to prioritise effort for the greatest commercial impact. What you'll need to succeed The successful individual is likely to be operating currently as a Head of Enterprise Architecture, Chief Architect or in a comparable group-level role within a complex or rapidly scaling organisation. You will bring a proven track record of establishing architecture frameworks in environments where governance, standards and consistency have historically been less defined and will be comfortable setting direction while building capability around them. From a technical standpoint, you'll bring broad, cross-domain expertise. This includes strong understanding across applications, data, infrastructure, integration, cloud and security, alongside a working appreciation of AI and machine learning and how these can be applied in a practical business context. Experience working with data platforms and analytics, coupled with an understanding of data governance, will be key in helping the organisation move towards a more insight-driven, future-ready operating model. There is also an expectation of formal grounding. You'll hold a degree in a relevant discipline such as Information Technology, Computer Science or Business Administration, alongside recognised enterprise architecture framework knowledge (TOGAF) and exposure to cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure. However, style and approach are equally important in this environment. The role requires someone who can translate architecture into clear, commercially relevant language, influencing senior stakeholders and bringing alignment across diverse parts of the business. The right person will be pragmatic, delivery-oriented and able to balance long-term ambition with the realities of an evolving organisation and active change agenda. Ultimately, this will suit an individual who is comfortable operating in ambiguity, who can bring structure without over-engineering, and who takes a hands-on approach to driving progress. Someone who can set a clear architectural vision, but just as importantly, ensure it is implemented in a way that delivers tangible outcomes for the business. What you'll get in return Company car (or allowance) and fuel card with a range of EV and hybrid vehicles to choose from Private health care and health care cash plan for you (and your family) Discretionary bonus scheme 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays Matched or contributory pension scheme What you need to do now If you're interested in this role, click 'apply now' to forward an up-to-date copy of your CV, or contact If this job isn't quite right for you, but you are looking for a new position, please contact us for a confidential discussion about your career. Sainsbury's DTD
Staff AI Engineer (AI Specialist)
Sainsbury's DTD
hackajob is collaborating with Sainsbury's DTD to connect them with exceptional professionals for this role. We'd all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That's waiting for you at Sainsbury's. Think about the scale it takes to feed the nation. The level of data, transactions and variety involved. Then you'll realise this is a modern software engineering environment, because it has to be. We've made significant investment in the standards and principles that shape how we work. We iterate, learn, experiment and champion ways of working such as Agile, Scrum and XP. So you can look forward to exciting opportunities across everything from AI to reusable tech. As a Staff AI Engineer, you will be the technical specialist connecting AI ambition to delivery reality across Sainsbury's Tech. This is a hands-on engineering role with division-wide scope. You will set the bar for how AI is engineered across the division, creating reusable patterns, defining standards and working across every Tech domain to ensure we build AI capabilities once and share them everywhere. The role is intentionally cross-cutting. Where most engineers go deep in one team, you will go wide across many, identifying duplication, reducing friction, and leaving every team you touch with stronger AI engineering capability than before. This is not a policy role . You'll write code, build proofs of concept, and solve hard problems alongside delivery teams. But your primary measure of success is the multiplier effect you create, not the features you ship directly. What you need to do Define and champion reusable AI engineering patterns, accelerators, and reference architectures that delivery teams across Sainsbury's Tech can adopt with confidence. Translate proven engineering workflows into reusable skills and agents that standardise delivery, reduce duplication, and accelerate teams across Sainsbury's Tech. Work across Tech domains (Customer, Channels, Supply Chain and Logistics, Argos, Data and AI Ecosystem, and more) to identify duplicated effort, converge on shared approaches, and reduce the cost of building AI solutions. Lead technical discovery and feasibility assessment for high-priority AI opportunities, providing clear, evidence-based recommendations on viability, effort and expected value. Build and maintain a living library of production-ready patterns covering areas such as RAG, agentic AI, LLM integration, prompt engineering and responsible AI guardrails. Facilitate cross-domain engineering forums, design reviews, and communities of practice, creating the conditions for AI engineering knowledge to flow freely across the organisation. Work hands-on alongside delivery teams to accelerate them through complex technical challenges, pairing, coaching, and transferring capability rather than taking over. Influence the AI and data platform roadmap, working with Platform Engineering, Architecture, and the AI Centre of Excellence to ensure strategic tooling meets the needs of delivery teams. Contribute to engineering standards and guardrails for AI development, ensuring solutions are secure, observable, responsible, and aligned to our strategic platforms. Stay ahead of the rapidly evolving AI landscape, evaluating new models, frameworks and platform capabilities, and translating emerging potential into actionable patterns for the organisation. Champion responsible AI principles across every solution and team you engage with, ensuring outputs are fair, explainable, and aligned to our governance framework. What you need to know Deep, hands-on engineering experience with AI technologies including large language models, generative AI and agentic systems. Proficiency in Python and modern cloud-native development practices (Azure preferred). Practical experience with prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), fine-tuning, and AI orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, Semantic Kernel, or equivalent. Strong understanding of data engineering fundamentals and how AI solutions interact with data platforms, pipelines, and governance. Experience operating across large-scale enterprise environments, navigating security, compliance, and integration complexity. Familiarity with Sainsbury's strategic platforms (Snowflake, Azure, AWS, Microsoft 365 Copilot) is advantageous. Awareness of responsible AI principles and practical experience applying them in delivery contexts. What you need to show A track record of engineering impact at organisational scale, not just team level. You have made other engineers and teams more effective, not just delivered your own work. Ability to move from ambiguous problem statements to working solutions at pace, comfortable operating in uncertainty and converging through experimentation. Strong technical communication skills, able to translate complex AI concepts clearly for non-technical stakeholders and articulate trade-offs confidently with engineering peers and architects. A genuine drive for knowledge sharing and capability building, actively lifting the AI engineering skills of those around you. Excellent collaboration and influencing skills, able to build trust quickly across Product, Engineering, Architecture, Data Science, and leadership. Strong judgement on build vs. buy vs. configure decisions, particularly in a fast-moving AI tooling landscape. Comfort operating across the full spectrum from low-code AI configuration to deep pro-code engineering, selecting the right approach for each context. High levels of technical curiosity balanced with pragmatism, knowing when good enough the right call is and when rigour is non-negotiable What decisions I can make Technical approach, architecture, and engineering standards for AI solutions across Sainsbury's Tech. Selection and curation of reusable AI patterns, accelerators, and reference implementations. Recommendations on feasibility, go/no-go, and scaling readiness for AI proofs of concept. Tool and framework selection for shared AI engineering patterns, aligned to strategic platform direction. Support we will provide Access to personal development tools including industry leader Bitesize talks, online self-development tools, and internal mentoring/coaching. Direct access to Sainsbury's AI and Data platforms, tooling, and cloud infrastructure. A collaborative environment working alongside Product, Architecture, Data Science, and Engineering leadership. Opportunities to attend external AI/ML events and conferences. Technical development resources, including access to relevant learning platforms, certifications, and emerging technology previews. Benefits Generous colleague discount across Sainsbury's, Argos, and Habitat Competitive holiday allowance Private Health Care Bonus scheme Pension plan Flexible / smarter working policy Access to special offers on gyms, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers and more Work-life balance matters to us. We offer flexibility in how, when, and where you work, combining remote collaboration with the right balance of freedom to support your life outside work. We are committed to being a truly inclusive retailer so you'll be welcomed whoever you are and wherever you work. Full time
hackajob is collaborating with Sainsbury's DTD to connect them with exceptional professionals for this role. Around here, there's always the chance to try something new - whether that's as part of an evolving team or somewhere else across the business - and we take development seriously and promise to support you. Sage
Product Manager - Payments
Sage City, Newcastle Upon Tyne
hackajob is collaborating with Sage to connect them with exceptional professionals for this role. Sage's Payments Platform is the trusted foundation that powers how customers move money globally. We operate two core services - Payments In (receivables collection) and Payments Out (supplier payments, payroll, disbursements) - integrating with payment providers across every major geography and method (ACH, SEPA, Wire, Card, Real-Time Payments, and more). Your customers are internal product teams. Your job is ensuring they can confidently embed money movement into their workflows through clean APIs, embeddable UI components, and a globally consistent provider network. This is a critical moment. Payments are increasingly the central differentiator that unlocks cash flow, liquidity, and fintech opportunities for Sage customers. You will own the evolution of both services, ruthlessly prioritise provider integrations globally, manage competing demands from internal teams, and ensure the platform scales to handle billions in transactional volume. Please note: This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in our Newcastle office What You'll Do: • Own the global payment platform roadmap for both Payments In and Payments Out. • Design the consumption experience for internal product teams - clear APIs and embeddable UI components so AP, AR, Payroll, Expense, and fintech teams integrate payments without managing provider complexity. • Ruthlessly prioritise provider integrations and payment methods - evaluate which providers and methods to support based on market demand, customer footprint, and internal product needs. Make high-leverage bets; say no to edge cases. • Work with providers on roadmap alignment, SLA management, feature prioritisation, and support escalation. • Define compliance and regulatory strategy - partner with legal and compliance to navigate PSD2, Open Banking, local payment regulations, fraud/AML rules, and data residency requirements. • Drive adoption and migration of internal products from legacy payment handling to the Payments Platform. • Own the evolution of embeddable payment UI - hosted forms, embedded payment inputs, and payment method selection components that products embed into their workflows. • Build alignment across a complex stakeholder network - coordinate roadmaps with internal product teams, manage provider expectations, and work with sales and fintech on new opportunities. What You'll Bring: • A track record of owning platform or infrastructure products where customers are internal - ideally in payments, financial services, or integrations-heavy domains. • Ruthless prioritisation and focus - you make high-leverage bets and cut scope decisively. • Strong stakeholder management - you manage competing demands from AP, AR, Payroll, and fintech teams and secure alignment without direct authority. • Multi-geography and regulatory fluency - you've built products across countries with different regulations, payment rails, and vendor landscapes without fragmenting the platform. • Exceptional communication across technical and business audiences - payment orchestration, compliance implications, business impact, and adoption strategy, all in the right language. • Ability to translate platform value into commercial concepts - you drive adoption by demonstrating ROI, not by mandate. Nice to Have: • Payments product management or fintech experience. • Experience managing 10+ third-party API integrations with trade-off decisions on vendor support and lock-in. • Experience with embeddable UI, developer experience, and API/SDK adoption. • Familiarity with event-driven architecture - webhooks, idempotency, event sourcing, eventual consistency. • Familiarity with Open Banking, embedded finance, real-time payments, or API banking trends. What Success Looks Like (First 12 Months): • A clear, documented roadmap for both Payments In and Out with explicit prioritisation logic - which providers and methods are being invested in, sunsetting, and why. • Provider ecosystem rationalised - low-value providers sunset, key partnerships strengthened, clear SLAs and governance in place. • Internal product adoption measurable and growing - AP, AR, Payroll, and fintech teams migrating to the platform; adoption metrics and ROI tracked. • Embeddable UI components adopted across products - well-documented, easy to integrate, regularly enhanced. • Compliance and regulatory strategy documented and trusted by compliance teams. • 99.95% uptime consistently achieved; engineering and ops teams aligned on SLAs. • 2-3 major features or provider additions shipped that visibly unlocked new capabilities for internal products. Benefits? We have plenty Video: • Generous bonuses and pension scheme: Up to 8% matched pension contribution plus 2% top-up by Sage. • 25 days of paid annual leave with the option to buy up to another 5 days. • 8 bank holiday days. • Paid 5 days yearly to volunteer through our Sage Foundation. • 50% income protection. • Holiday buy + sell. • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage. • Work away scheme for up to 10 weeks a year. • Ongoing training and professional development. • Hybrid working. • Healthy Mind app membership • Access to various helpful memberships for finances, health and wellbeing.
