Spectrum IT Recruitment
AI Product Engineer
Spectrum IT Recruitment Southampton, Hampshire
A growing technology team is changing how software is built and used across a nationwide retail business. AI is already supporting customer enquiries, call transcription, document processing and internal development. The next step is to apply it more widely, while improving the underlying products and processes that support the business. This is a hands-on software engineering role for someone who wants to understand real operational problems, help shape the solution and see it through to production. AI Product Engineer Remote, UK 40,000 to 60,000 You will work remotely, with regular opportunities to spend time at one of the company's stores or vehicle preparation centres. Living within practical travelling distance of a site would therefore be useful. The opportunity The business operates a growing network of used car supermarkets, supported by its own technology covering stock, pricing, sales, customer communications and internal operations. Its engineers use agentic coding tools such as Claude Code as a normal part of software development. These tools are used to build and deliver working products, not simply to autocomplete code. You will work with teams across sales, customer care, finance, logistics and vehicle preparation to understand how work currently gets done. You will then help decide what should be improved, what should be built and whether AI is genuinely the right solution. The immediate focus is likely to include improving how customer leads are managed across telephone, text, website enquiries and the company's existing AI assistant. Other projects could include: Building voice agents for appointment confirmations and follow-up calls Expanding the company's customer-facing AI assistant Using multimodal models to process service histories, photographs and documents Extending an internal MCP server that connects AI tools with company systems Developing internal applications and dashboards Contributing to applications used by employees across the company's stores The approach is pragmatic. Sometimes the answer will be an AI integration. Sometimes it will be improving the workflow, using an existing product or building conventional software properly. How the team works Engineers take ownership of particular business areas and work directly with the people using the software. The team works in short delivery cycles, releases regularly and uses agentic coding tools throughout development. AI may generate a significant proportion of the initial code, but engineers remain responsible for understanding, reviewing and safely releasing it. You will be supported by product colleagues, a Principal Engineer and an experienced wider team, with opportunities for pairing, technical guidance and code review. What you will need You should have: A good grounding in software engineering Experience developing with TypeScript Confident use of an agentic coding tool such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or OpenAI Codex The ability to understand, review and improve AI-generated code The confidence to speak with non-technical colleagues and ask useful questions Experience taking a feature or personal project from an idea through to a working outcome Familiarity with Git and modern development practices Commercial experience building AI-enabled products would be useful, but it is not essential. Relevant personal projects, experimentation and demonstrable use of agentic development tools will also be considered. Experience with any of the following would be helpful: Third-party API integrations AWS Lambda or serverless development Event-driven systems OpenAI, Anthropic or other LLM APIs Prompt engineering, MCP or agent patterns React PHP, Laravel, MySQL or DynamoDB Swift or SwiftUI You are not expected to have worked with everything listed. What this role is not This is not an ML engineering or data science role. You will be integrating existing AI services into business workflows rather than training models. It is also not a ticket-only development position. You will be expected to help understand the problem, shape the solution and take responsibility for what reaches production. The level is flexible. Applications are welcome from capable junior and mid-level engineers who can demonstrate sound engineering fundamentals, strong use of agentic coding tools and the motivation to take ownership. Benefits Salary of 40,000 to 60,000 Remote working across the UK 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays Company pension Support from an experienced technical and product team Genuine involvement in deciding how AI is used across the business Apply now or contact Chris Lynes at Spectrum IT Recruitment for an informal discussion about the role. Spectrum IT Recruitment (South) Limited is acting as an Employment Agency in relation to this vacancy.
