Laboratory Chemist (Hazardous Waste)

Grays, Essex

34-38K dependent on experience

Our client, a leading provider of hazardous waste management services, is looking to recruit a Laboratory Chemist for its operations in Grays, Essex.

In this role you will carry out a variety of duties to enable the smooth running of the Hazardous Waste Laboratory. This will include logging and coordinating all samples and performing laboratory tests.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Take samples of routine wastes arriving at the Transfer Station
  • Log all samples, record results, monitor and read samples sent to 3rd party labs
  • Use of laboratory equipment which will include XRF, FTIR, Photometry, Closed Cup Flash point and Bomb calorimeter
  • Look after and maintain the Laboratory equipment to a good standard
  • Keep the laboratory tidy
  • Ensure samples tested are kept and stored so they can be retrieved easily
  • Organise disposal of old samples no longer needed
  • Test unknown wastes for purposes of pricing and classification
  • Test known wastes to confirm waste acceptance and flag any non-conformances
  • Support the sales team with chemical knowledge and test results
  • Read labs results and classify waste
  • Ensure all activities are carried out in accordance with current Health & Safety and Environmental legislation and that Lab PPE requirements are adhered to

Other duties may include:

  • Classification of wastes
  • Pricing of wastes leaving site
  • Providing disposal costs for quotes for new enquiries at the Transfer Station
  • Classify waste with appropriate EWC codes and assign ADR labels as required
  • Supervision of vehicles loading with hazardous materials as required
  • Perform other reasonable duties (Ad hoc) as requested to support the business needs which may include off site visits for sampling or technical advice.

Candidate requirements:

Applications are invited from candidates qualified to degree level in Chemistry or related subject with previous experience working in a laboratory environment using the equipment listed above. Candidates with experience working within the hazardous waste industry would be of particular interest.
