Job Description

Research Scientist in Disease Control (Fungicide Biokinetics & Fungal Genetics)

Are you passionate about advancing agriculture and making a difference in global food security? Do you have a knack for microbiology and molecular biology? If so, we invite you to be part of an innovative organization dedicated to transforming how crops are grown!

About the Opportunity

In our Crop Protection Bioscience function, we are on a mission to understand the mode of action and enhance the performance of plant protection products. We are currently seeking a talented Research Scientist to contribute to our Disease Control team. This exciting role will focus on two critical areas: Fungicide Biokinetics and Fungal Genetics.

What You'll Do:

  • Conduct In Vivo Studies: Design and perform biokinetics studies in fungi and plants to assess fungicide bioavailability.
  • Explore Fungal Genetics: Execute experiments involving mutagenesis, transformation, CRISPR-based genome editing, and sensitivity assays in fungal and oomycete pathogens.
  • Molecular Biology Workflows: Carry out cloning, PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, and genome analysis.
  • Data Analysis: Interpret experimental data and prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for project teams.
  • Cultivation Maintenance: Maintain high-quality fungal cultures, ensuring contamination-free operations.
  • Protocol Improvement: Review and enhance established protocols to boost capacity and efficiency.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Share insights and build new capabilities to strengthen our Disease Control toolkit.
  • Safety Compliance: Implement HSE actions to ensure all operations meet safety standards.

What We're Looking For:

Essential Requirements:

  • BSc or MSc (preferred) in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Plant Science, or related field.
  • 1-2 years of laboratory experience in an industry or academic setting.
  • Strong technical skills in microbiology and molecular biology techniques.
  • Understanding of genetic transformation principles.
  • Excellent scientific writing and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage timelines effectively.
  • A collaborative team-oriented mindset, capable of contributing to multiple projects simultaneously.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience culturing microorganisms and fungal pathogens (eg, Zymoseptoria, Fusarium).
  • Hands-on experience with fungal transformation and CRISPR-based genome editing.
  • Familiarity with ADME studies for active ingredients.
  • Experience with LCMS analysis for small molecule detection.
  • Knowledge of data handling, including storage, reporting, analysis, and visualization tools.
  • Experience running automated workflows.

What They Offer:

  • Comprehensive training in all relevant techniques, including LCMS-based analysis and fungal genetics workflows.
  • A stimulating and international environment with impactful work.
  • Well-equipped laboratories at our International Research Centre, fostering an open culture and diverse workforce.
  • Opportunities to learn from highly qualified, experienced colleagues, enhancing your scientific and technical expertise.
