Job Title: Site Manager - Externals (Groundworks & Yard Slabs)

The Role
We are seeking an experienced Site Manager to take full responsibility for the delivery of external works packages, including groundworks and yard slabs, on a major project in Bedford. This is a key leadership role, acting as the single point of responsibility for groundworks, ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all external works, including earthworks, drainage, services, subbase, and concrete yard slabs
- Take full control of the groundworks package, driving day-to-day site operations
- Plan, sequence, and coordinate works to meet programme requirements
- Manage subcontractors and drive performance on site
- Oversee logistics, plant movements, and coordination within a live construction environment
- Ensure safe pedestrian and plant segregation, maintaining strict traffic management compliance
- Review and monitor RAMS and SSOW in line with company procedures
- Lead daily briefings (DABS) and communicate risks and controls clearly
- Ensure permits are in place, followed, and audited
- Coordinate inspections, technical approvals, and sign-off with engineering teams
- Maintain high standards of quality control (levels, compaction, materials compliance)
- Keep accurate site records, including diaries, inspections, and briefings
- Identify and elevate risks relating to programme, safety, and coordination
- Support incident and near miss management, ensuring actions are closed out
Team & Reporting Structure
- Reporting to: Senior Site Manager
- Supported by: Senior Site Engineer, Site Supervisor
- Working closely with: Engineers, SHE team, Logistics, and Subcontractors
Requirements
- Proven experience managing large scale external works packages on major projects
- Strong technical knowledge of groundworks, earthworks, drainage and concrete yard construction
- Experience working in live, logistics heavy environments
- Solid understanding of RAMS, permits, and temporary works processes
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage subcontractors effectively
Qualifications
- SMSTS
- CSCS Black or White Card
- First Aid Certification
- Cat & Genny (Level 4+) (desired but not essential)
