TASS & Performance Sport Clinical MSc Studentship

Our annual TASS & Performance Sport Clinical MSc Studentship position at Sheffield Hallam University is a unique developmental position for Chartered Physiotherapists with musculoskeletal and/or sports physiotherapy experience. Develop your clinical skills in multisport & MSK physiotherapy, in conjunction with a fully funded MSc level study.

Previous studentships gained international Sports Physiotherapy experience through this role and continue to do GB level work within Sports. Others have returned to the NHS into rehab and first contact practitioner roles or private practice.

Salary: £13,200 pro rata, tax free bursary + MSc fees. Hours: part time - 20 hrs per week. Contract: Temporary (18 months - 2 years, negotiable). Position commences September 2026.

About the Role

As a Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme hub the successful candidate will deliver physiotherapy services with senior clinician support to TASS athletes up to international level and to athletes on the Performance Sport program, Team Hallam members, university staff, students and external partners such as the Professional Footballers Association and PGMOL. The role includes close working with Strength & Conditioning, rehabilitation, return to play management across many sports (see TeamHallam.org). It also involves supervising a team of pitch side student physiotherapists, providing multi sport pitch side care at the sports park and hockey grounds, supporting physiotherapy students at external events, clinical educator roles and interdisciplinary teaching within the university.

This position offers a unique opportunity to develop multisport and MSK physiotherapy skills, educational, teaching and leadership development, and aligns with potential membership of the MACP upon successful completion.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver physiotherapy services to TASS athletes, Team Hallam members, university staff, students and external partners.
  • Provide multi sport pitch side physiotherapy at the sports park and hockey grounds.
  • Supervise a team of pitch side student physiotherapists.
  • Support physiotherapy students at external events and clinical educator roles.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary CPD activities, attend workshops and conferences nationally with TASS.
  • Deliver up to 20 hrs per week clinical cover during peak times and oversee BUCS sporting fixtures (6 hrs per week).
  • Provide education and motivation to athletes/coaches on programme adherence.
  • Travel nationally and internationally with individual sports.
Qualifications & Experience
  • BSc (Hons) / MSc Physiotherapy qualification.
  • Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (MCSP).
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Minimum 3 years working as a Chartered Physiotherapist in musculoskeletal and/or sporting environment.
  • Understanding of current healthcare issues in sports physiotherapy / musculoskeletal physiotherapy / private practice.
  • Evidence of CPD with an MSK bias.
  • Excellent ability to work independently and within the MDT.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work occasional unsociable hours and weekends.
  • Able to travel across the region.
  • Ability to educate and motivate athletes/coaches with programme adherence.
  • Ambitious, innovative, and proactive in work.
  • ACPSEM bronze award or higher.
  • Sports trauma qualification (or ability to gain before commencement of post).
  • Experience managing sports injuries at competitive level.
  • Experience delivering athlete/client education.
  • Knowledge of exercise prescription / strength and conditioning.
  • Understanding of private practice working.
  • Car driver with own vehicle.
