Stress Engineer
Rolls Royce Bristol, Gloucestershire
Job Description Job Title: Stress Engineer Working Pattern: Full time; hybrid (on average three days per week on site) Working location: Bristol (Filton) / Hybrid An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Rolls-Royce in Bristol and help safeguard the mechanical integrity of our engines across several Defence Programmes including New Product Introduction (NPI). Stress engineers ensure the integrity of our products. They predict the mechanical behaviour of components and sub-systems, supporting the Design function, considering various failure mechanisms (e.g. proof, ultimate, fatigue (low & high cycle), creep etc.) and contributing factors (e.g. vibration, thermal induced loads, inherent manufacturing anomalies, corrosion, extreme operating conditions). The role of a Stress Engineer includes being influential at all stages in the design cycle (to ensure designs are robust, meet requirements and are optimised) through to the products service life and to component disposal. These roles involve working with a range of key business stakeholders to support the delivery of key programme milestones thus enabling the delivery of our Defence Combat strategy for the next 50 years. Why Rolls-Royce? Rolls-Royce is one of the most enduring and iconic brands in the world and has been at the forefront of innovation for over a century. We design, build and service systems that provide critical power to customers where safety and reliability are paramount. We'll support your continual professional development (including chartership routes) and provide mentorship from experienced analysts. You'll have real ownership of meaningful work packages that move the needle on airworthiness and reliability. You will gain broad exposure across components and sub-systems, developing deep domain expertise, utilising industry-standard tools. What we offer We offer excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts. As a minimum we're all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week. Conducting mechanical experiments. This includes preparation of experiment specification for tests on test rigs and engines, supervision and support of experiments to ensure safe execution, plausibility check of results during the execution of the test, analysis and interpretation of test results, and comparison with analytical and/or empirical models. With a spacious, modern office in Bristol city centre and a team of around 20 engineers, they've built a genuinely collaborative environment, deliberately moving away from the traditional corporate mould in favour of something more people-focused. That culture shows up in the day-to-day: flexible working, monthly socials ranging from dragon boat racing to rugby tournaments, and a team that clearly enjoys spending time together. Projects are varied and technically interesting - recent wins span new-build residential, commercial, hotels and laboratory fit-outs, with a consistent focus on low-carbon design running through everything they do. Following a period of steady growth and a strong run of new project wins, they're now looking to add a Senior Mechanical Engineer to the team. The Role You'll take ownership of mechanical design across a range of project types, working from concept strategies through to post-completion evaluation. Day-to-day this means producing detailed engineering design including calculations, schematics, specifications, equipment schedules and supporting documentation, as well as representing the business at client and project team meetings. There's a mentoring element to the role too - supporting less experienced engineers and contributing to their development within the business. You'll be expected to stay current with legislation, standards and emerging technologies, and to bring that knowledge into project delivery. About You Mechanical building services design engineer with strong technical grounding and the ability to articulate design rationale clearly Chartered or actively working towards chartership with a recognised institution Solid understanding of low-carbon design principles and their practical application Comfortable working independently and as part of a wider multidisciplinary team Strong communication skills - able to hold your own in client-facing situations and present confidently Experience across sectors such as residential, commercial, education, healthcare or critical systems would be well received Familiarity with relevant software including Amtech Prodesign, IES Virtual Environment, Revit, AutoCAD and Dialux/Relux The Business Founded around a decade ago and grown to approximately 20 staff, this consultancy has established itself as a serious player in the Bristol building services market. Sustainability sits at the heart of what they do - not as a bolt-on service but baked into the way they approach every project. With a strong pipeline of work and further growth planned, this is a well-timed opportunity to join a team on an upward curve. Salary is competitive and dependent on experience. The role is based in Bristol city centre with flexible working available.
