Machine Shop Supervisor
Location: North Somerset
Salary: £37440 - £41600
Hours: Monday Friday (40 hours per week)
Overview:
First Military Recruitment are currently seeking a Machine Shop Supervisor on behalf of one of our clients. Our client encourages applications from ex-military candidates; however, all applicants will be given due consideration.
The successful candidate will oversee the daily operations of the machine shop, ensuring work is completed to a high standard, within deadlines, and in full compliance with company procedures. You will lead a team of machinists, manage workflow and resource allocation, and maintain operational efficiency and safety within the workshop environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise machinists and workshop personnel, ensuring efficient and effective operations.
- Allocate daily tasks, monitor progress, and ensure adherence to quality and safety standards.
- Plan and manage workflow to meet customer and production requirements.
- Ensure all components and materials are available to meet production schedules.
- Manage timekeeping, attendance, and discipline within the team.
- Provide training and guidance to machinists to develop their skills and ensure consistent output.
- Operate manual and CNC machinery, including lathes and pillar drills, as required.
- Read and interpret CAD drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine job requirements.
- Select appropriate machines and tools, and set operating parameters such as feed rates and speeds.
- Inspect finished products to ensure quality and conformance with specifications.
- Maintain accurate records of production, defects, and quality checks.
- Perform routine maintenance on machinery and coordinate repairs as necessary.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workshop environment in line with company health and safety policies.
- Support the Workshop Manager with resource planning, scheduling, and performance reporting.
- Be available for call-outs, shift work, or overtime as required.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a machinist or machine shop supervisor.
- Skilled in the operation and/or programming of manual, semi-automated, and CNC machines.
- Strong understanding of mechanical assembly, tooling, and material types (ferrous, non-ferrous, plastics, and copper).
- Proficiency in reading blueprints, technical drawings, and using precision measuring instruments (callipers, micrometres, verniers).
- Knowledge of machining processes, speeds, feeds, and material handling.
- Experience with welding and balancing is advantageous but not essential.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
- Competent in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Sound understanding of health and safety protocols and workshop best practices.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
