Job Description

Senior Mechanical Design EngineerElevation Recruitment are delighted to be partnering with a leading engineering company based in Sheffield, in their search for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. Specialising in bespoke structural solutions, our client has earned a reputation for technical excellence and innovation, delivering high-quality engineered systems for infrastructure and construction projects across the UK and internationally.

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced and highly capable Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take a key role within the engineering team. This is a senior-level position that will involve leading design activities, mentoring junior engineers, and taking ownership of complex design challenges. The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise in mechanical and structural design, particularly in hand calculations, alongside a deep understanding of welding, fabrication, and engineering principles.

You will play a pivotal role in ensuring practical, efficient, and robust designs are delivered on time and to the highest standards, supporting both UK and international projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of bespoke mechanical components and assemblies, from concept through to manufacture and installation.

  • Take ownership of detailed hand calculations (stress analysis, joint strength, load assessments, etc.) to validate and optimise designs.

  • Review and approve technical drawings, models, and documentation produced by junior engineers and CAD technicians.

  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to less experienced team members.

  • Collaborate closely with the fabrication team to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and compliant with welding/fabrication standards.

  • Interpret and apply British and international design codes and standards.

  • Act as a technical authority, providing expert support to project managers, fabricators, and installation teams.

  • Ensure all work is delivered in line with company quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Requirements
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Significant experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within structural or heavy engineering sectors.

  • Demonstrable expertise in manual hand calculations for structural and mechanical design.

  • Strong knowledge of welding principles, weld design, and fabrication processes (machining, cutting, assembly, etc.).

  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).

  • Good understanding of materials, tolerancing, and manufacturing methods.

  • In-depth knowledge of BS, EN, and ISO design codes and standards.

  • Strong communication, leadership, and team mentoring skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving ability and meticulous attention to detail.

Desirable
  • Experience working on infrastructure or construction projects.

  • Familiarity with FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation).

  • CSCS card (or willingness to obtain one).

What's on Offer
  • The opportunity to take a leading role on complex, bespoke engineering projects with tangible real-world impact.

  • A senior position within a highly skilled and collaborative engineering team.

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.

  • Clear opportunities for continued career progression and professional development. For more information, please contact Steve Barnett or Jack Heffren
