An experienced Principal Officer to provide expert leadership and specialist advice within Public Protection and Licensing. This is a senior professional role, supporting service delivery, performance improvement, and complex casework across a regulatory environment.

You will act as a subject-matter expert within your discipline, lead on high-profile and complex cases, support service development, and mentor officers to ensure high standards of enforcement and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Provide high-level professional and technical advice across Public Protection and Licensing

Lead or support complex, high-profile and politically sensitive cases

Support the Team Manager with operational delivery and performance management

Supervise, mentor and support officers on casework, enforcement techniques and procedures

Lead on staff training, quality assurance and best-practice development

Develop and maintain service policies, procedures and improvement initiatives

Act as discipline expert, advising officers, managers, Members and stakeholders on new or changing legislation

Build effective partnerships with internal teams, agencies and external stakeholders

Lead on specific projects and service initiatives

Manage delegated resources and ensure legal and regulatory compliance

Requirements

Significant experience within Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing, or a related regulatory discipline

Experience handling complex, high-profile or sensitive complaints

Strong understanding of enforcement, risk management and public accountability

Proven ability to mentor staff, lead projects and drive service improvement

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Qualifications

Degree or Diploma in a relevant discipline (e.g. Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing)

or equivalent professional qualification or substantial experience

Role-specific professional registration required where applicable (e.g. Food / EHO roles)
