Job Description


Our client is currently seeking a dedicated Planner to join their team in the planning sector on a contract basis. This role involves handling a varied caseload of planning applications, including complex householders, prior approval, lawful development certificates, change of use, pre-application advice, and minor developments. You will also address related appeals at both delegated and committee levels.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Process a broad range of planning application proposals and provide high-quality pre-application advice, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and internal performance targets.
  • Communicate effectively with the public, Councillors, stakeholders, and agents.
  • Attend Planning Committee meetings and present your cases with support from a more senior member of staff, ensuring appropriate follow-up actions are taken.
  • Lead on smaller planning appeals, including those dealt with via fast-track or written representations.
  • Maintain high standards of customer service and meet performance targets.
  • Liaise with statutory and non-statutory consultees to support applications, enforcement cases, and appeal determinations.
  • Interpret and apply relevant planning legislation and associated frameworks.
  • Ensure a structured and rigorous approach to continuous improvement.


Job Requirements:

  • Significant experience in town planning or a related field with a clear understanding of planning processes and legislation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to communicate with a wide range of audiences, including Councillors and the public.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and well-structured reports.
  • Strong organisational skills and a proactive approach to workload.
  • Ability to work well within a team and independently.
  • Skilled at understanding technical plans and documents.
  • Knowledge of planning policies and legislation.
  • Recognised degree in planning or a related discipline, or working towards completing such a degree. MRTPI or eligibility for membership is desirable.
